Faith 2/8/2019

There must be a beginning to any great matter – But the continuing unto to the end, until it be thoroughly finished, yields the true glory. -Sir Francis Drake

Start it, finish it, and along the way believe in it. What you are aiming for is great, and the only way to get it is to keep going.

The Virtue of Faith

There are things out there that we cannot see, but we know it is there. Not only do we accept these truths, but we rely upon them with confidence. Our faith goes beyond our belief in God. It extends to our country, our families, and our friends.

Wherever you go, go with all your heart. -Confucius

It takes faith, but there is no half-way here. Go my friend, go.

Great minds have purposes; others have wishes. -Washington Irving

Are you a dreamer or are you a doer? It is good to have faith that our wishes will come true, but faith without works is dead.

Begin to be now what you will be hereafter. -William James

You may not physically be your future self now, but you can be mentally. To be healthier tomorrow, you have to make healthier decisions today.

Grow in Confidence Through Experience

As a gymnast, Alec, is confident and daring. He doesn’t give a second thought to trying new tricks, because he knows based on previous experience, that he can eventually master them. At the age of six, he is the youngest and smallest Level 2 gymnast in his developmental class.

As a wrestler, Alec, is completely different. His years practicing gymnastics has given him an edge in strength and coordination, but he is lacking confidence. Even as he begins his second season in wrestling, he is still an only child getting used to an aggressive sport that puts a whole different type of stress on his body.

I want him to be more aggressive as a wrestler. I want him to know that not everything has to hurt. But as much as I want him to progress quickly as a wrestler, I also have to realize that it takes time. And for Alec, it takes experience. The more he practices and the more experience he gains, the greater his confidence will grow.

It is easy for us to have confidence that we will exceed in whatever endeavors we pursue. Why start them if we don’t think we can complete them? The greater your confidence in your own abilities, the greater the chances that you will succeed. But where does this faith in your abilities come from? It comes from experience. It comes from practice. Through work we can lay the foundation that will give our faith the chance to flourish. As the apostle James said, “Faith without works is dead.”  (James 2:26)

Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your belief in yourself. –Robert Collier

To the Finish Line

It is a key word echoed amongst athletes and teams. FINISH.

Everybody can start. They can set out on a grand quest or just a neighborhood 5K. They can decide to drop a few pounds or commit to their New Year’s resolutions. So many starters. So very few finishers.

Can you be different? Can you not only start, but can you finish?

Making it to the playoffs isn’t enough. Completing half of the Couch to 5K training isn’t enough. Where are the promises you made to yourself in January, because it is now December?

It takes faith, hard work, and endurance to complete the task you set out to do. But if you can do it, you can be the one that crosses the finish line. You can find the true glory of accomplishment.

There must be a beginning to any great matter – But the continuing unto to the end, until it be thoroughly finished, yields the true glory. –Sir Francis Drake

In This, I Have Faith

There are some topics in which I struggle to speak. I am just not comfortable with the subject matter. Why? Because I don’t spend enough time dealing with it. I can read about it and understand it intellectually, but can I live it? Can I put that which is in my head into my heart? Can I imprint it onto my soul?

Faith

I know it is there. I can’t see it, but I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is true. That it is there.

The universe works in its own perfect order. Even that which seems chaotic is a part of its nature. Will the sun come up tomorrow? I have no reason to believe otherwise. No matter how bad things get, the sun will rise and begin a new day. In this, I have faith. In this, I can be grateful that there will always be a light at the end of the time of darkness.  But what if I am wrong, and a day comes when the sun is no longer there? This is out of my power to control. I will close my eyes and remember the times of light until my last hour.

There are some people that I have a tremendous amount of faith in. I can know that there is no wavering with them. They are exactly as I have come to expect them to be, and I can trust them to be just that. Can they break that faith? Of course. But that is outside of my power and until then I will continue to hold that faith.

Within me. Within the fabric of my soul, I believe. I don’t know what it is. I can’t see it. But I know that if I keep doing what I am doing, the days ahead of me will be filled with sunshine. I will no longer live in the darkness of my past but will continually be walking toward the light. In this, I have faith that as I practice the virtues that I study, I will become more virtuous.

The belief that becomes truth for me…is that which allows me the best use of my strength, the best use of putting my virtues into action. – André Gide

Be not afraid. The light will come. Even in the darkest of times, the light will come. In this, you can have faith.

Said vs. Done

Faith that your actions will always speak louder than your words.

Faith that your hard work will pay off in the end.

To get the “well done, thou good and faithful servant,” you have to do the work. That line isn’t given out to the ones that only give lip service.

To the inventor who never gets into the workshop, the would-be novelist who never has the time to put pen to paper, and the kid that messes up but says he’s going do better next time:

Have faith in the truthfulness of Franklin’s words, “Well done is better than well said.”

Perfecting My Art

I create a post. I feel really strong about the message and the quality of the content. Later, I check the stats. No likes, little traffic, minimal interest. I thought my stuff was good. So why didn’t anybody care to read it?

It is hard not to take it personal. When I first started I was afraid my best writing would go unread. I was afraid that by the time I developed an audience my ideas would run out. But that isn’t the case. The more I create, the greater potential I have to create more. The more I write, the better I become at writing. My craft gets refined. I learn to use words better. I learn to make a more impactful point with less words. I learn. I grow. I share. The stats don’t matter. I will keep doing what I am passionate about. The words will be there whether or not they are read. Who knows? Maybe there will come a day, when somebody finds it. Maybe it will make them smile. Maybe it will cause them to think. That’s the reason why I started writing.

Maybe nobody is buying what you are selling or listening to your song. Maybe not yet. If you keep perfecting your art, adapting and becoming stronger, you will find your success. If what you have is adding value to the lives of others, they will come.
